physiological and biochemical strategies to live at stable, sub-zero temperatures; however, evidence suggests low temperatures may place constraints on protein homeostasis. Todgham et al. (pp. 369–378) examined the ubiquitin–proteasome protein degradation pathway in two species of Antarctic fish compared with their temperate New Zealand relatives to better understand temperature compensation of a key pathway involved in the maintenance of protein integrity at sub-zero temperatures. Mountain chickadees from different elevations sing different songs : acoustic adaptation , temporal drift or signal
Song in songbirds is widely thought to function in mate choice and male–male competition. Song is also phenotypically plastic and typically learned from local adults; therefore, it varies across geographical space and can serve as a cue for an individual’s location of origin, with females commonly preferring males from their respective location. Geographical variation in song dialect may reflec...

متن کاملBirdsong performance studies: a contrary view
Please cite this article in press as: Kroodsm 10.1016/j.anbehav.2016.06.015 Birdsong biologists interested in sexual selection and honest signalling have repeatedly reported confirmation, over more than a decade, of the biological significance of a scatterplot between trill rate and frequency bandwidth. This ‘performance hypothesis’ proposes that the closer a song plots to an upper bound on the...
متن کاملHumpback Whale Song on the Southern Ocean Feeding Grounds: Implications for Cultural Transmission
Male humpback whales produce a long, complex, and stereotyped song on low-latitude breeding grounds; they also sing while migrating to and from these locations, and occasionally in high-latitude summer feeding areas. All males in a population sing the current version of the constantly evolving display and, within an ocean basin, populations sing similar songs; however, this sharing can be compl...
